Nuclear Security Summit 101
President Obama sees it as “the most immediate and extreme threat to international security.” Former Senator Chuck Hagel calls it “truly a global issue.” The Washington Post warns of immediate and extreme gridlock, reminding Beltway folk that “living at the center of world political power comes at a price.”
The Nuclear Security Summit has drawn over 40 world leaders from 47 countries to Washington to discuss measures to secure nuclear materials and prevent terrorists from getting nuclear weapons. This could be the largest summit of kind – ever. With the Summit and the Nuclear Posture Review, analysts from the nuclear policy community are calling this April a “Pivot Point,” where the world finally shifts from Cold War nuclear mindsets and starts tackling the most pressing threats of our time.
It’s high time for all of us to get informed and get active on this issue.
